A magnificent Hollywood night of orchestra! by John Paul

MANILA, Philippines - The ABS-CBN Philharmonic Orchestra, led by Gerard Salonga, staged a magical concert that featured Hollywood-theme songs from Star Wars, Harry Potter, ET and many popular tunes composed by award-winning maestro John Williams.

I was able to enjoy the philharmonic concert that included special performances from Jose Mari Chan and Karylle.

Tickets at the Meralco Theater was sold out, with heartwarming support from VIPs, celebrities, friends, families and movie buffs who attended the show.

The program started with "Albus Dumbledore" of Harry Potter welcoming everyone to a magical night of music.

Maestro Gerard graciously introduced us to the popular blockbuster scores of John Williams such as themes from Harry Potter, 1984 Olympics, Schindler's List, Close Encounters of the 3rd Kind, E.T., Jaws, Superman, NBC News, Jurassic Park, and Indiana Jones.

Jose Mari Chan and Karylle performed a touching duet of the Pavarotti movie theme, Yes, Giorgo.

I think the instrument sections did a wonderful job. I appreciated the clarity that came out from each instrument.

I loved how the music performances were spiced up by actual cosplayers from the 501st Legion and Hogwarts Philippines. Cosplayers came out in costumes of major movie characters to fit the themes being played.

Among the magnificent numbers, I specifically enjoyed the performance of Superman's theme song "Can You Read My Mind" by Karylle. Her voice blended perfectly with the heartfelt instrumental conducted by maestro Gerard and his team of world-class musicians.

The show culminated with a standing ovation, leading to an awesome encore of Star Wars classics themes accompanied by cosplay characters such as Darth Vader, C3PO, Jedis and troopers.

I think classical music and the arts can really reach out to wider audiences in the Philippines with shows such as the ABS-CBN Philharmonic Orchestra's Magic of John Williams.
